IPART has invited community feedback on a draft report which recommends rental prices for communication sites on certain Crown lands.

Chief Economist Mike Smart said the report presents updated market evidence on comparable prices for sites on private land and uses this information to recommend updated rental prices for Crown lands.

“This review uses a larger sample of market prices than was previously available, and this sample size provides confidence that our estimates are representative of the state of the market,” he said.

“The draft fee schedule strikes a balance between encouraging the use of Crown land for communication sites and providing the Government a fair return.”

Mr Smart said the prices in the draft report are somewhat lower than the prevailing prices, which were set in 2013 and indexed by inflation.

“We are also recommending a new approach for communication sites on rooftops, where an additional fee would be payable,” he said.

“This approach is administratively easier to manage than previous recommendations for site by site negotiations and provides users of communication sites with certainty of their rents.”

The draft report is available on IPART’s website. Stakeholders can make submissions online until 12 August 2024. IPART will consider all submissions before finalising its review and submitting a Final Report to Government in September 2024.
