Dr Paul Paterson retired as IPART Chair on February 12.

Paul was appointed as an IPART Tribunal member in 2013, before taking up a senior role in the Commonwealth government. He returned to IPART as chair in February 2019.

CEO Liz Livingstone paid tribute to Paul’s valuable contribution. She said as well as being a delight to work with, Paul ensured that regulatory decisions were well thought out and tested from every angle.

“He was always looking for IPART to improve the way it works. Our current review of how we regulate water is an example of that,” said Ms Livingstone.

Paul brought to the role his expertise as an industry economist with 40 years of experience as a private sector executive, academic, consultant, regulator and senior public servant.

He worked for the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris as well as holding an impressive range of senior positions in Australia.

Tribunal member Deborah Cope is Acting Chair. Ms Cope has been a Tribunal member from early 2017.

Ms Cope brings to the Tribunal more than 35 years’ experience in Australian public policy and management.
