IPART has released a draft report on the maximum taxi fares and review of annual Sydney taxi licences from July 2014.

Our draft recommendation is for fares to be unchanged, combined with 150 additional unrestricted licences and 40 additional peak availability licences. The draft recommendations are designed to make it cheaper and easier for passengers to catch taxis, and cheaper and easier for taxi operators to run a taxi business, without causing an unreasonable impact on existing licence owners.

As part of this review we surveyed Sydney residents about their taxi use in Sydney.

See draft report, Report on Survey of Taxi Use in Sydney and media release.

IPART has also released a draft report on maximum taxi fares in country areas of NSW from July 2014.

Our draft recommendation is to continue to leave country fares unchanged for the second year from July 2014.

High licence values in many areas indicate that there are significant economic rents built into the cost structure in country areas. Therefore there is scope to not change fares again this year and make taxi services more affordable for passengers, without disrupting the supply of taxi services.

Country fares apply in all areas of country NSW outside of the greater Sydney metropolitan area, that is, all areas apart from Newcastle, the Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Wollongong and Shellharbour, and Moama, Barham, Tocumwal, Mulwala, Barooga and Deniliquin are exempt.

See Country areas draft report, and media release.
