IPART is currently reviewing the regulation of the tow truck industry in NSW. This regulation is established by the Tow Truck Industry Act 1998 (the Act) and the Tow Truck Industry Regulation 2008 (the Regulation), and is administered by Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). It includes:
- a licensing scheme that imposes requirements on tow truck operators, tow trucks and drivers, which can be enforced by RMS and Police
- maximum fees and charging arrangements that apply to accident towing services for both light and heavy vehicles (prices for trade towing services are not regulated).
We are currently part way through this review, and have released a fact sheet and draft report setting out our draft recommendations. The draft report contains 69 recommendations on fees and licensing. We invite all interested parties to make submissions in response to the draft recommendations - people can respond to any or all of the recommendations or make other comments that they think we should hear.
We are also keen to hear from tow truck operators and drivers. Operators and drivers can make a short submission by responding to key questions here or provide a more detailed submission through our standard submission process.
We will be holding a public forum to discuss the draft report on 28 October 2014 at 9.30 am in IPART’s offices. Click here to register to register your interest in attending.
Submissions on the draft report are due by 11 November 2014. Late submissions may not be accepted.
