In recent years, concerns about the environmental impact of electricity generation, together with high and volatile prices and generation capacity constraints, have sparked renewed interest in strategies designed to modify the timing and level of consumer demand for electricity, known as demand management. The Premier has asked the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (the Tribunal) to undertake an inquiry into what role demand management should play in providing the state’s energy services.
