During March 1996 the Tribunal released its determination on electricity prices, establishing separate revenue paths for the network and retail supply business of the distributors for three years to June 1999. Constraints on any increases for customer bills were also imposed by the Tribunal.
The new electricity distributors have embarked on rationalising electricity prices across their respective franchise areas. For example, both Energy Australia and Integral Energy have established uniform tariffs within their respective franchise areas for their residential customers. Rural distributors essentially have regional prices at the moment, reflecting the tariffs of their former constituent distributors.
The purpose of this paper is to:
· report on retail price movements in the past five years
· compare current retail prices with those interstate.
